Welcome to the third edition of Friday Treats!
This is a collection of some cultural highlights that I’ve been enjoying this week, including book recommendations, podcasts, articles, Substack shares, and other observations.
And please share your own treats too 🎁
It’s December already, and I am one month into writing here on Substack. This platform has helped me to connect with some wonderful people and I feel like I am buzzing with ideas, which fills me with absolute joy! However, I have also felt a degree of discomfort/unease related to what I am doing here, why would anyone read what I have to say, and so on. I recognise that a lot of these particular thoughts are related to lacking some degree of confidence in my writing, and I am also aware that it is how most people feel when sharing some parts of themselves with the outside world. Yet, there has still been a niggling feeling simmering away below the surface about what Substack ‘is’. Without going too far down a philosophical and psychological rabbit hole, I did read a few pieces this week that were able to articulate some of the niggles I am experiencing far better than I ever could:
discusses issues such as ambition, and success here on Substack, and shares her thoughts about 'Notes’ (and much more). I am not privy to some of the original context for these essays, but I love how Hayes finishes the essay about making experiences offline, and getting outside.📖 Speaking of getting outside… The nature cure: How time outdoors transforms our memory, imagination, and logic is a wonderful article about the power of being out and about in nature. I am fortunate that I have relatively easy access to green space in the city where I live, so this piece was a timely reminder for me to go out and enjoy it 🌲
🎧 The Rest is Entertainment: a new podcast hosted by Marina Hyde and Richard Osman, which takes a look at some current entertainment stories from the UK. I am not based in the UK but podcasts such as this help me connect with some cultural highlights from home.
📖 And finally, I purchased a brand new book in the form of Good Material by Dolly Alderton (apologies for the huge cracks in my wall). I adored her previous novel Ghosts, and so I am looking forward to reading this over Christmas.
Have a great weekend,
Sarah xx
