Hello,
I had hoped to complete this post after returning to Hong Kong early last week, but I was stumbling through the fog of jet lag and couldn’t think straight. (A bit like with hangovers, jet lag seems much worse than when I was younger).
But when I first starting putting this post together my mind was perfectly clear because I was still in London enjoying the September sunshine.
One very exciting thing that occurred during my time there was that I met a fellow Substacker IRF!
and I connected right here on this platform, and so when I knew that I would be in London I reached out to see if she wanted to meet.Hannah is a multi-hyphenate, and so alongside a part-time teaching role, she is a writer, podcaster, and has an interior design business. So when she invited me to a ‘sip and paint’ event organised by the British Institute of Interior Design, I didn’t hesitate to say yes. Prosecco and painting - brilliant!
Partly inspired by the J. M. W. Turner paintings that I viewed at the Tate Britain earlier in the week, I tried to recreate a Hong Kong sunset. My canvas is on the bottom left… but unfortunately, I didn’t get very far in the hour!
If you want to learn more about Hannah’s work then check out her Substack, or her website. And if you would like to listen to Hannah’s podcast, you can also find an episode that we did earlier this year.
A combination of feeling inspired by the design workshop, reviewing some of the photos that I took when I was staying with my parent’s, and a jet lag-induced extended period of lying about on the sofa did help get this post over the line!
Take care,
Sarah
The Flowers
One of my favourite Disney films is Alice in Wonderland (1951). I have no idea how many times I have watched it, but on a recent trip to the UK I was reminded of the film and of this song in particular while I was sitting in my parent’s back garden:
As with many parts of the story, this part of the film goes dark pretty quickly, but while I hummed the tune to myself, I grabbed my camera and took some pictures of the dahlia that was beginning to bloom.
Rain and sun on the dahlias
Alas, there are no dahlias in Alice in Wonderland but I did enjoy watching the video.
And there were dahlias at the Tate!

See you next week!
Finally, if you like what you see at the The Best of Intentions, it helps tremendously when you give the heart a squeeze, share the piece with one of your mates, or leave a comment (I read and reply to all - a great joy!). Thank you 😉
IRL Substack meet-ups are the best! Ooh, and I just finished listening to your podcast interview too... Brilliant. We have stuff to discuss... 😊👏
That's awesome that you met a fellow Substacker and drank in the culture of your home country! Pretty dahlias. Take it easy, Sarah, xo
