Hello, hello!
If you are a new reader to The Best of Intentions, then welcome. And also welcome back to existing subscribers.
I had something else in mind for today’s post but then, I decided to hold off from hitting the publish button as there was something that didn’t feel quite right. You know that feeling when your gut says: This isn’t ready. Let it rest for a little longer.
Anyway, while that post and my thinking continue to (hopefully) assimilate, here are five photographic moments that I wanted to share with you from the past month.
I also want to experiment with something new here on TBOI using the Chat function. You can find out more at the end of the post 😀
After months of telling myself that I would make some new cushion covers for the sofa at home after the others fell apart, I pulled my finger out and got to it. A process picture in the truest sense and snapshot of the messy spare room.
When I went out to revisit the walking tour that I joined as part of the Hong Kong Walls Festival, I came across this scene - a woman praying at a shrine just as a cat wandered along the ledge. I didn’t linger too long as this was clearly a private moment, but I did silently thank her and the cat for the serendipitous timing.
Another image that I captured when I revisited the walking tour route. Aspire’s themes focus on nature and pixels, and here I love the contrast of the digital imagery with the life-like paintings of the birds.
This piece was located opposite a 2024 contribution for the HK Walls festival, and I remember being struck by the immediacy of it. The ageing adds another layer of texture in my view, although unfortunately, I don’t know the artist or when it was completed.
Last year I visited a neon exhibition located in Tai Kwun, a former police station in the Central district of Hong Kong. And from what I can gather the exhibition was such a success that Tai Kwun commissioned artists to provide neon installations to connect some of the areas within the building. I went early in the morning two weeks ago to avoid the crowds, and I have added additional shots to my Instagram page if you are interested in seeing more.
💬 The Chat is open for business!
This newsletter began as a bit of an experiment. In the beginning, I had no idea what I was doing, or what direction I wanted it to go in, but over the past six months, I have found that working on this newsletter and spending time in the Substack ecosystem that accompanies it has become one of the highlights of my day/week. I love being here, and connecting with others through my own work and with what other people are sharing.
I am still finding my feet, and my voice here, but with my scientific and creative hats on, I would like to try something new. And I’d love for you to join me.
This post was all about me sharing some moments from April, but I would really like to see some of your highlights. If you’re interested, please head over to the Chat and let me know.
Your April moment/highlight doesn’t need to be reflected in a photograph, it could be a book that you’ve been reading, an article that you enjoyed, or it could be something completely random! The Chat is a collaborative space, so please let me know a bit about yourself too.
Thanks for being here and take care,
Sarah
And finally, if you would like to see this newsletter in your inbox on a regular basis, then please consider subscribing to TBOI by adding your email address to the link below. Also, if you like what you see here, it helps tremendously when you give the heart a squeeze, share the piece with one of your mates, or leave a comment (I read and reply to all - a great joy!). Thank you 😉
I lingered on the neon.☺️ Really cool to imagine artists creating with colored light.
A private moment across such a public-facing situation, on a ledge, and with a cat! Such a fascinating scene. Your other photographic finds are great, but that moment of solitude is really special.
