I think it's normal for most people to lack objectivity about themselves! 😂 Then you have those funny/awkward moments when someone says your X but you're like, no, I never do X, and so on. Overall, I like things to LOOK neat and tidy. [Big fan of baskets to throw stuff in] 😁And I feel I'm probably more anal retentive than most, but when it comes to work, I can't be bothered. I mean, I have some sort of organization, but they give us so little space at work that I have a pile of papers sitting at the bottom of my locker! But good on you for getting the Spring Cleaning Bug! ⭐
Considering that my desk (which you have seen some pictures of) is not organised, then you currently have additional insights into my state of mind and the state of my apartment 😆
And I agree, there comes a point when having some sort of organisation is perhaps better than nothing at all when it comes to some things. And I love big baskets to throw stuff in!
I can relate so closely to much of this, Sarah. Strong organizational skills for some parts of life (and work!), and yet my photos and inbox are quite the sights. As well as my closet, kitchen drawers, and garage! I think I have finally understood it's a matter of priorities; regardless of how capable I am of creating order out of chaos, I think some messes simply don't bother me or aren't the best use of my energy at the moment. It doesn't mean I won't ever get to them, but my energy is limited and until something really begins to bother me, I let it go. Not ideal, but when I do get organizing, watch out!😂
Haha! Yes, I can be quite the force when I want to organise something 🤣
But you're spot on, there comes a point when you have to ask yourself: What's the point (of organising X)? For the most part, it's only ourselves that certain stuff is affected by i.e., hard-drives. Absolutely no-one cares about this besides me! So, it's funny to me now how much it was bothering me for a time.
This really resonates with me! I think I’m pretty organised at work, but, only the other day, my husband was sorting through some house paperwork and was questioning my filing skills! 😬 Note: we have a rubbish concertina-style box file with no neat/nice way of labelling the tabs. Therefore, I haven’t bothered 🤣
Don’t even get me started on my digital filing! 😳
Also, as I have as reading the first half of your post, I was thinking of Oliver Burkeman…then, there he was! Have you read Four Thousand Weeks? 👌
Hi Naomi, I have read Four Thousand Weeks and loved it! I have so many post-its inside that I return to every so often. Have you read Mediation for Mortals too?
I wonder that with things like tidying that how we 'experience it' can be similar to the parts of ourselves that choose to share with others or that we don't. Similar to you, I am work-organised ready (for the most part), but I do experience some joy in not having an organised desk at home. The private me is more relaxed and more can't be arsed, while the public me wants to be seen in a certain light.
