Thank you for introducing the term, third places. I've never heard of this before. Now, you've got me thinking about the significance, and also, about what is ours? For the people of Siem Reap, it has to be Angkor Wat -- so many families go there to picnic, walk, bike, etc. And so far, we've been horrible about getting our butts out there. Thanks for the motivation! xo
Haha I am glad that Angkor Wat is within easy reach. Jealous... yes!
When I first came across the term of third places when I was studying sociology, it didn't really mean much to me tbh, but it was something that I returned to after the pandemic. I do love my apartment but it's nice to get out sometimes haha!
I love this concept of “third places.” Makes so much sense! For me…I’d say any of the coffee shops I work at (I have a few), the library, and a handful of local spots with good food and/or cocktails. I think the outdoors is its own places as well here (hiking trails, bike paths, the beach).
I am yet to work in my local library, but it is somewhere that I’d like to try. Although I would be worried that I would be too distracted looking at the books 🤣
Great post, Sarah. I was in Hong Kong throughout the pandemic so this all sounds very familiar.
I guess the closest thing I have to a third place is my local botanical garden. It's free, well maintained and just a few minutes' walk away. The flowers come and go, like beautful casual visitors. But the trees give an impressive and welcoming "thereness". Among my favourites are the Japanese tulip trees. The world always seems a better place under their branches.
Thank you, Jeffrey, and I hope that refreshing your memory of some aspects of the pandemic wasn't too familiar (I try not to reflect back on that time too much).
And your local botanical garden sounds beautiful, and I agree, the world does seem a better place under branches. Just as I read your words, I am picturing HK park at Admiralty.
Thanks Martin, I am very grateful that the air con has been fixed, especially for the staff! Working in the kitchen during peak summer must have been horrendous.

It’s so true!☺️

Ah yes. I used to go there a lot. 😊
Third places are great! I'm relieved to hear the air conditioning situation looks to be sorted. To lose a space you hold dear isn't taken lightly. 😅
